Louisville Metro Police are investigating an officer involved shooting at Boone Square Park near Portland.
LMPD Chief Robert White, said the shooting was between two men, before officers were involved. Around 9:15 Saturday evening, Chief White said, 46-year-old Jerry T. Hampton was in a vehicle, but then got out and walked through Boone Square Park, shooting at another man. Police said it may have started because of a fight between the two men.
Chief White said an officer responded, immediately. Investigators say when the officer arrived, Hampton fired his weapon at the officer. That's when the officer fired back. Then, two more officers arrived at 19th and Rowan Streets and the chief said Hampton fired his gun at them. He said the officers returned fire.
Chief White said three bullets hit Hampton. He went to University of Louisville hospital, where he remained Sunday. Chief White said he was in stable condition. He said officers recovered a handgun and a rifle from the scene.
Police officers are looking for the man they say Hampton was shooting at. He was not at the scene. Chief White said officers want to speak with him to find out what lead up to the shooting.
