A Louisville man and woman were arrested after police said the duo stole items from purses during a Sunday church service.

Churchgoers told police they witnessed the crimes inside Second Presbyterian Church on Old Brownsboro Road. An officer caught up with the suspects outside a nearby PNC Bank, using what police called a perfect description of the pair.

The officer interviewed and arrested Benjamin T. Welsh, 22, but Kendal Peters, 19, got away. According to a police report, an unsuspecting neighbor gave Peters a ride. The officer later located Peters at Grinstead Drive and Pleasantview Avenue, and Peters started running.

Police said the officer caught up with Peters, and wrestled her to the ground where the two struggled for several minutes.

The officer said Peters offered him sex in exchange for her freedom, saying, "Can't we make a deal for sex?"

The arresting officer found an iPhone, a knife, makeup, $126 in cash, a syringe and other items police said were stolen in both suspects' possession.

Peters is charged with receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, and fleeing or evading police and attempted bribery.

Welsh is charged with theft by unlawful taking.
