Two Louisville Metro Police officers were transported to the hospital and a suspect is dead after after a pursuit and shooting that started near 10th and Jefferson.
Authorities say it started just after noon, with a report of shots fired at 10th and Jefferson streets. Police responded and say when they arrived on the scene, a man got out of vehicle, shot at police, then drove off. Police pursued the suspect and the chase ended less than 1 mile away, at Nulligan Street. Authorities say the suspect got out of the vehicle and fired at police again, with an assault rifle.
Authorities say the suspect then took his own life.
LMPD Interim Chief Ish Burkes held a news conference at U of L Hospital Tuesday. Burkes says two officers were wounded. One of the officers was grazed in the face by a bullet. The other was cut by glass after a bullet went through the window of their police cruiser.
Burkes says both officers are in stable condition, and do not have life threatening injuries.
Later Tuesday afternoon, a SWAT team staged an area at 10th and Jefferson, searching for a suspect, possibly in connection with the shooting.
After a few hours, the suspect turned himself in to authorities.
