A Louisville Metro Police Officer was recovering at Jewish Hospital Friday evening after being struck by a van during a foot chase.

The officer, who has not been identified, was chasing 38-year-old Michael D. Cardine when they ran into the street at the intersection of East Oak and South Floyd streets, said police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley.

A van struck the officer, who was knocked down but got up and managed to tackle Cardine and arrest him nearby, Smiley said.

The officer had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. Only one person was inside the van and police believe it was an accident so no charges will be filed against the driver, Smiley said.

Cardine was being held at Metro Corrections Friday night on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, fleeing and evading the police, wanton endangerment of a police officer and third-degree assault of a police officer, according to Metro Corrections records. No bail had been set Friday night.
