The attorney for a man accused of fatally shooting two Detroit police officers plans to ask for a competency examination for the defendant during a preliminary exam Monday in 36th District Court.
Defense attorney Kerry Jackson said Eric Lee Marshall, 23, was suffering from severe depression after his mother's death in November, according to Local 4 reports.
Marshall is accused of fatally shooting Officer Jennifer Fettig, 26, and Officer Matthew Bowens, 21, during a traffic stop on Gilbert Street, just south of Michigan Avenue, on Detroit's southwest side on Feb. 16.
Investigators reportedly found 22 empty shell casings at the shooting scene.
Marshall is charged with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, two counts of felony murder and one count of felony firearm.
A judge will decide Monday if there's enough evidence to send the case to trial.
Jackson is requesting that the judge postpone the trial until a psychiatric evaluation of Marshall is completed.
