A group of Kentucky's bravest have earned the title of best in the country. The Honor Guard competed along with guards across the nation in this weeks National Police Week competition in Washington D.C.
It was the first time our Honor Guard attended the competition in Washington--and they made history. That is because it was the first time a first-time group has taken first place in all events.
There are three phases, uniform inspection, posting of colors, and an exhibition phase which is a special demonstration. Our Honor Guard did a special folding of the Commonwealth flag. They took first place in all three phases, making them the overall winner of the competition.
They were asked to participate in the Peace Officers Memorial Day Service alongside President Obama. But the week wasn't just about honoring those who still serve, but also remembering those who died in the line of duty.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund says 116 officers died in the line of duty in 2009, the lowest number in 50 years.
