Former Jefferson County Police Chief Russ McDaniel has died at the age of 81.
McDaniel was chief of police from 1971 to 1978 and 1985 to 1986.
He is credited with spearheading the effort to secure funds for the county's first emergency medical service.
He also began or enhanced several special teams, units and patrols.
McDaniel's funeral is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Fairdale.
