A comment made by Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson while he was in Charleston talking about metro government last week has stirred up some controversy, after a political opponent of the mayor's posted it on his Web site.

As part of an interview with The Charleston Gazette that was posted on the Gazette's Web site, Abramson described Louisville before metro government as getting "poorer, blacker and older."

Ed Springston, who ran against Abramson in the 2006 Louisville mayoral election, posted the 24-second long snippet on his Web site on Monday.

Abramson told Louisville television station WHAS on Monday that he was sorry if the comment offended anyone, but said the quote was taken out of context.
