An undercover police officer was shot during a drug bust in North Philadelphia Tuesday night.The alleged gunman also was shot during the incident, authorities said.
Police arrested the alleged gunman and another suspect, a third is still on the run.
Both the officer and the injured suspect were being treated at Temple University Hospital. Both were expected to survive their injuries.
The shooting apparently happened in the 2800 block of North Orkney Street during an undercover drug operation.
"Four Hispanic males surrounded (the officers) with guns and tried to rob them," said Philadelphia police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson. "The police got out of the car, there was a struggle, there was shots fired."
One officer was shot in the wrist, another was not injured. one suspect was shot in the chest.
Mayor John Street visited the officer in the hospital Tuesday night.
"We appreciate the work that he's doing on behalf of the citizens of Philadelphia," Street said afterward.
