A Riverdale police officer was killed Wednesday night, after being taken hostage with his own gun at a police station, and the man suspected of shooting him is also dead.
The officer was identified as William Rolniak, 39, a 13-year veteran of the Riverdale police department.
The man accused of killing Rolniak was also shot to death; he was identified as Adrian Humes, 27, of Chicago.Police said Humes had just been questioned at the police station in an unrelated case of attempted murder and kidnapping.
He was not handcuffed and was being escorted out of the questioning room to a cell when he grabbed Rolniak's gun out of his holster, police said.
Witnesses state Humes then tried unsuccessfully to carjack one or more people, and one of the carjacking victims -- a 72-year-old man -- was shot and slightly wounded.
Humes then allegedly shot Rolniak in the head. Three other officers who arrived at the scene told Humes to drop the gun, police said, and shot him dead when he did not comply.
