A 3rd division officer was forced to shoot an armed man last night after the suspect attacked the officer with a knife.
James Michael White, 33, died early this morning at University Hospital following the confrontation. The incident began shortly after midnight when unit 311A attempted to stop the vehicle driven by White near the intersection of Greenwood and Terry. White refused to stop for the officer.
The pursuit was terminated shortly after it began, but the officer continued to follow the suspect from a distance. The suspect eventually stopped his vehicle in a trailer park in the 2800 block of Clark Run road and was approached by the officer shortly thereafter. The suspect produced a knife and lunged at the officer. The officer was able to deflect the attack, draw his weapon and fire, striking the suspect in the chest.
Deputy Coroner Jack Arnold said White has an extensive criminal history with at least two felony convictions. He also said White had been a police officer in West Point, Ky., but did not know exactly when.
