A car carrying a man wounded by gunfire ran out of gas Thursday night on the way to the hospital.
The man, who was not immediately identified, died a short time later.
Emergency workers were called at 8:16 p.m. to the Thornton's gas station at First Street and Broadway, which was a far as the car got, said Vince Luney, a MetroSafe communications supervisor.
This gas station is about six blocks from University Hospital.
The car, an older Buick, had started out from the area around 28th Street and Gaulbert Avenue, said Officer Dwight Mitchell, a spokesman for Louisville Metro Police. This location, in the Park Duvalle neighborhood, is about a block from the north end of Iroquois Park.
Several people had called police to report shots in the area around 7:45 p.m., Luney said.
After arriving on the lot of Thornton's, emergency workers took the man to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police were questioning the driver of the vehicle, Mitchell said.
Later Thursday night, police had no suspects in the case, said Lt. Steve Green, head of the LMPD homicide unit.
Green confirmed that the initial report, a 911 call from a person on the Thornton's lot, said the red car had run out of gas.
Another vehicle, a white car, was surrounded by police tape at 28th and Gaulbert, but Green said police were still investigating what role, if any, the car there may have had.
Anyone with information is urged to call the anonymous tip line, 574-LMPD.
It is Louisville's 35th homicide of the year, including two from July being investigated by Shively police.
