The Louisville Metro Police Department will replace hundreds of its bullet-proof vests after a warning from the manufacturer that they may not be safe.
Second Chance Body Armor sent warnings last week to police agencies nationwide warning that its vests may fail to perform under certain conditions because of the synthetic fiber Zylon.
Between 500 and 700 of the twelve-hundred Louisville Metro Police have the Second Chance vests. Chief Robert White says that until the new vests are ordered, officers will continue to wear the vests from Second Chance.
Second Chance is the nation's largest maker of body armor. About 100,000 of the vests are being used in several states, including Texas, Georgia, Michigan and New York.
