State police fatally shot a man early Saturday while responding to a domestic dispute in western Kentucky, authorities said.
Gerald R. Buschkoetter, 39, died at Owensboro Mercy Health Systems at 4:15 a.m. CST, state police said in a written release.
Troopers and Daviess County sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 hang-up call in Philpot at 2:44 a.m., state police said. They arrived to find a domestic dispute in progress between Buschkoetter and his wife, Jamie Buschkoetter, police said.
Gerald Buschkoetter was armed with two handguns and had fired several shots inside the residence, police said. Troopers and deputies pleaded with Buschkoetter to put down his weapons, police said, but after intense negotiations, Buschkoetter pointed a handgun at the officers.
Two troopers, fearing for their safety, fired their weapons, state police said.
Trooper Lonnie Bell and Trooper Brett Coomes have been placed on administrative leave, pursuant to Kentucky State Police policy, while the shooting in investigated.
Bell is a nine-year veteran of the Kentucky State Police while Coomes began his career as a trooper in 2004.
