Courier-Journal Publishes Officers Names and Salaries

The Courier-Journal recently published a news article citing that Chief Robert White was the highest paid city employee with an annual salary of $145,150.60. While one could reasonably assume that this story's introduction is leading up to a

persecution of how much the Chief of Police is paid, we will actually focus on the off-shoot "news" story also reported by the C-J. It appears that the Courier-Journal saw fit to not only publish the salaries of the Chief and his command staff, but to publish the names and salaries of all city employees.

On the heels of controversy following the published photo of Louisville's 63rd homicide victim, the Courier-Journal seems unabated in it's quest to be known as a newspaper that belongs in the checkout line of the local grocery store rather than a credible news source. Under the semblance of "The Kentucky Open Records and Open Meetings Acts" the CJ has made the names and corresponding salaries of all 1615 Louisville Metro Police Department employees via their web site. Are addresses and phone numbers next?

I understand the law gives them the right to this information because we are public employees. I also understand that just because someone has "the right" to do something, doesn't make it right. As a police officer, I have "the right" to issue a speeding citation to

C-J President, Edward E. Manassah, when I catch him going 5 miles per hour over the speed limit, but that wouldn't necessarily make it right, would it?
