Metro Police continue their search for a suspect that exchanged gunfire with an LMPD officer Sunday night.
LMPD Public Information Officer Alicia Smiley has identified the officer involved in the shooting as Bryan Wilson, an officer with the city's Second Division. Officer Wilson joined LMPD as a recruit in August 2011; he was reportedly responding to a report of a female subject who was experiencing trouble with her children.
Smiley says police responded to the scene around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at Shorty's Food Mart at 35th Street and West Broadway near the Shawnee and Chickasaw neighborhoods.
As Officer Wilson arrived at the scene, he saw a car speeding away. He able to stop the car about a block away at 36th Street and Garland Avenue, but shots were fired at the officer.
"At that time, one or more of the suspects began firing shots at the officer," Smiley said. "The officer did return fire."
Smiley says no one was injured, but the two suspects ran from the scene. Police were able to take one person of interest into custody, but a possible suspect is on the run.
The investigation turned into a very large crime scene with detectives blocking off a large area to look for evidence.
The K-9 unit and public integrity unit were called out for the investigation. But there are still a lot of unanswered questions including how many shots were fired and what initially happened at Shorty's Food Mart before the shooting.
