An LMPD detective accused of being under the influence of alcohol when he allegedly shot an unarmed man last year was arraigned Tuesday.
Chauncey Carthan pleaded not guilty during his court appearance.
His attorney Steve Schroering tells WDRB News, "It's been about a year-long investigation, and Mr. Carthan actually is relieved in one sense that he can tell his story in court. We believe when all the facts come out he'll be exonerated on these charges."
Carthan was working as a detective in narcotics and intelligence unit in September of 2012 when he got into a confrontation with a man at 24th and Chestnut on Sept. 4, 2012. He ended up shooting the man in the thigh.
That man, 22-year-old Ishmael Gough, was hospitalized after the shooting.
In an interview with WDRB's Valerie Chinn a few days after the shooting, Gough's attorney, Derek O'Bryan, said Gough was on his way home from his aunt's house after a night of watching movies, but got into a confrontation with Carthan at 24th and Chestnut Streets Tuesday night, about a block from his home, authorities say.
"He was being tailed by Detective Carthan," O'Bryan said. "He (Gough) did stop his car. Det. Carthan got out of his car. My client complied with his order. My client begged to not be shot and my client was shot in the street."
Carthan, was not in uniform and was driving his black, unmarked police car. Gough's attorney says there were no lights or sirens and a passerby called 911.
Carthan was charged with wanton endangerment, DUI, and official misconduct. He has been on paid administrative since the shooting.
