A Radcliff man died Wednesday night after he exchanged gunfire with police officers, a Radcliff Police Department spokesman said.

Spokesman Bryce Shumate said three officers went to the Foxwood Apartments on Seminole Road at Woodland Drive to question a man who was a person of interest in a burglary investigation.

When the officers asked the man to come to the police department to give an official statement he agreed but asked if he could first go into his apartment to get some shoes, Shumate said.

The officers followed the man to his bedroom and "In doing so he was able to get a pistol that he had somewhere there in the room and fired at our officers," the spokesman said. "Our officers returned fire and retreated from the residence" before calling for backup, he said.

That was around 5:45 p.m. Radcliff Police re-entered the apartment along with Kentucky State Police and Vine Grove Police at about 7 p.m. "and found that the person of interest...was deceased," Shumate said.

Shumate would not say whether the man, whose name had not yet been released, died from gunshots fired by the officers. He said the Kentucky State Police are investigating the incident.

One Radcliff officer, Sgt. Jeremy Davis, was hit in the ankle by a ricocheted bullet, Shumate said. "It did not penetrate the boot or the skin at all" and Davis was treated at the scene, he said.
