Gene Kang

Gene Kang comes to WHAS 11 News from the "Windy City" - Chicago. But it is the warmth of the people of Louisville that has really knocked him off his feet. He is proud to live in Kentuckiana.

Before WHAS 11 News, Gene worked as a reporter and fill-in anchor at the FOX affiliate in South Bend, IN, WSJV-TV.

He was no stranger to harsh winters and lake effect snow.

Gene covered everything from Notre Dame Football to tornadoes and even pastry-eating contests for the only three hour morning show in the market.

His first on-air job was in the Lone Star State at the CBS affiliate in Amarillo, TX, KFDA-TV.

Gene anchored "News at Noon" and also reported. His most memorable story was on a summer camp designed for children with HIV and AIDS.

It was truly a heartwarming experience.

Gene got his start in TV journalism at the NBC affiliate in Chicago, WMAQ-TV, as a Senior Intern in the Consumer Unit: Target 5.

That's where he discovered his passion for interviewing, reporting and creating a voice for community members. He also worked behind-the-scenes as one of their youngest assignment editors after graduating college.

Gene is an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) and has helped with several projects. He's also a dedicated member in faith of the SGI-USA and attributes his "unshakable" happiness to this Buddhist philosophy: www.sgi-usa.org.

When he's not hunting down a great story or seeking spiritual growth, Gene finds himself at the gym; visiting loved ones in Chicago; reading; watching his favorite reality shows; or freestyle dancing.

He's also a self-proclaimed animal/medical expert. Born in Chicago... his parents are Korean immigrants who happen to be a Veterinarian and Registered Nurse.

Gene received his Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Communications and minor in Business from Loyola University Chicago, 1999.

He is also the first male TV journalist to win the Radio Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) Michelle Clark Fellowship Award for minority journalists.

He is honored to live out his dream career in the Louisville Metro area and says, "This is an opportunity of a lifetime! I'm surrounded by amazing people at work. My mission is to tell stories that inform, entertain and touch your heart with passion and determination."
