Description

Officer Brett Adkins of the 4th Division was forced to shoot a burglary suspect today after responding to a burglary in progress call in the 1600 Block of Longfield Ave.

A resident of Longfield Avenue called police at approximately 11:30 a.m. to report a burglary in progress at 1618 Longfield.

When the officer arrived he found the suspect attempting to escape out a window in the rear of the house. At "Taser Point" the officer issued verbal compliance commands, but instead the burglary suspect charged the officer and a fight ensued. During the struggle the suspect gained control of the unfired taser so the officer drew his sidearm and fired. The suspect was hit multiple times in the upper and lower extremities.

Officer Adkins (423A) suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The suspect was transported to University Hospital where he is in "Stable" condition.

The neighborhood had been listed recently as a "burglary hotspot" because of numerous unsolved break-ins.
